Renowned Supreme Court lawyer and former AAP leader, Prashant Bhushan, on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP President, Amit Shah, of being involved in infamous Gujarat massacre and ‘fake encounters.’

Bhushan took to twitter to cite the Gujarat’s Additional Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta’s mail to say there was indeed ‘smoking gun’ of the involvement of these two leaders of India’s ruling party in Gujarat riots.

His tweet said;

The Home Minister also asked the students to decide between the “Western ‘dil maange more’ culture” or Indian values, adding that “dil maange more” was not “Bharat ka sanskar” (Indian culture).

Days after justifying meat ban and even proposing to extend it during Navaratri and saying APJ Abdul Kalam was a  nationalist despite being a Muslim, Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma has reportedly made another controversial statement.

Speaking to CNN IBN, Mahesh Sharma said that, “Girls wanting a night out may be all right elsewhere but it is not part of  Indian culture”. He said that he has nothing against Western culture but Indians shouldn’t follow it blindly.

According to him, Westernisation for the sake of modernisation…

South Asia Faculty Response to HAF Statement

We at the Academe Blog have been hosting posts on a conflict between scholars sparked by Indian Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley. While we encourage and promote open debate and discussion, some of the comments on some of the posts have been anything but civil. Heated discussion can be positive and all of us feel passionate about certain issues. But we don’t need to turn that into attack. Please keep this in mind in your comments. Also, we welcome other guest posts with other views, hoping to present all points-of-view in the words of the holders. Please also remember that none of these posts represent the views of the AAUP. Faculty Response to Harassment by Hindu Nationalist Organizations

Over the Labor Day weekend, most signatories of the “Faculty Statement on Narendra Modi’s Visit to Silicon Valley” received threats from individuals in South Africa and Canada and email harassment  from the Hindu Vivek Kendra,  a Hindu nationalist organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a member. Several letter signatories have also been targeted  by a board member of the Hindu American Foundation, another Hindu nationalist organization. We wish once again to underscore that this kind of hate mail and malicious distortion of our position is indicative of the deteriorating climate for academic freedom and freedom of expression in India;  faculty who become apologists for such abuse and who themselves indulge in ad hominem attacks only reflect the rooting…

Faculty Statement on Narendra Modi Visit to Silicon Valley

As faculty who engage South Asia in our research and teaching, we write to express our concerns about the uncritical fanfare being generated over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley to promote “Digital India” on September 27, 2015.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley highlights the role of a country that has contributed much to the growth and development of Silicon Valley industries, and builds on this legacy in extending American business collaboration and partnerships with India. However Indian entrepreneurial success also brings with it key responsibilities and obligations with regard to the forms of e-governance envisioned by “Digital India.”

We are concerned that the project’s potential for increased…

London, May 5 (IANS) The British government has revoked visas issued to two prominent members of right-wing Hindu organisations in the south Indian state of Kerala after the Indian community here filed complaints against their visit.

Sasikala Teacher, chairperson of Kerala-based Hindu Aikya Vedi (United Hindu Front), and N. Gopalakrishnan, director of Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, were invited to attend the first Hindu Religious Conference at Croydon in London.

The British consulate in Chennai revoked the visas issued to both the leaders after a section of the Indian community complained about their campaigns on radical Hindutwa ideology, London-based Asian Lite newspaper reported.

Translations of the two leaders’ YouTube speeches and other social media messages were handed over to the authorities.
